Living in the past vs: Remembering the past

Not to long ago I got together with two of my old High School buddies. We were a quartet back then, one of our number has since passed. We sang our old songs (mainly Mills Brothers songs from the 50’s), we went through our year books reading entries and smiling a lot and at one point we went through the ‘No longer with us’ list, published on our Class of 56 web page (SMHS56), and eulogized our friends.

“Remember Ray, he was such a great guy,” or “Wow, Corkie’s gone. She was so much fun,” or “Oh no, Sophie Tsavalas is gone, I went to the Senior Prom with her”.  On and on we went through the entire list of 78 old friends that we hadn’t seen for 60 years. It was sad and enervating in one respect, yet joyful and ebullient in another. Reliving an ‘ancient’ fondness is somehow very rewarding. I really got into it.

“Jake, cmon now, you’re living in the past,” my buddy said to me.

“Actually, Jim,” I said, “I’d prefer to think of it as remembering the past, something our 78 old friends can no longer do. Recollection is something we can do in the here and now and I for one savor that ability.”
